Regarding Mobile Developers And Web Development Groups |
| Microsoft Watch - Developer - Windows Mobile Developers Pay What? - Web Development. Like Apple, Microsoft plans a mobile applications store. Like iPhone developers, Windows Mobile developers submit applications through a specific program. Microsoft's terms are at first glance generous: Developers get a 70 percent cut, while Microsoft takes 30 percent. This is similar to Apple's App Store and some other application marketplaces.
But Microsoft asks for way more upfront than does Apple. Both companies charge developers $99 per year to participate in the mobile apps program. But Microsoft imposes a five-application cap, after which developers pay $99 per each additional application per year. Apple developers pay the 99-buck fee; that's it. Silicon Alley Insider's Dan Frommer rightly asks: "Why is Microsoft nickel-and-diming Windows Mobile developers? " I wondered the same thing.
Perhaps Microsoft thinks that five applications per developer is a reasonable cap and the fee structure will discourage riffraff submissions. But charging moreabove five applications anywayis the flipside of a coin. Microsoft doesn't want to pay too much. Five applications reach Microsoft's subsidization limit. After that, developers pay $99 an application.

Windows Mobile Developers Pay What ?
News Commentary. S-o-o-o, Microsoft wants few free apps at the Windows Mobile application store.
That's how I interpret last week's mind-boggling Windows Mobile 6.5 developer strategy. I was so dumfounded, it took five days before I could blog. Even now, there's no senseother than perhaps arrogance, or idiocythat I can see to Microsoft's plans.
